Archive for April, 2010

As most of you know, since February I have used the Motorola Droid phone. I have been trying to find a decent solution to listen to my podcasts in the car. I had an FM transmitter so I could listen through the car stereo. However, this had to physically attach to the headphone jack on the phone and it required two AAA batteries that only lasted about 2 hours per set. I needed something better.

I started doing some research into what other people have used with the Droid phone. One thing I kept seeing was using the A2DP stereo bluetooth streaming to get to some sort of speaker system. So I started looking around the net for a bluetooth speaker that was worth having.

I found the Motorola EQ5 roKr bluetooth speaker and I was intrigued from the point that I saw the picture. I actually thought it was a bit bigger than it is. I expected it to be about a foot long by 6 inches high based on the few pictures I looked at. When it came, it’s actually almost the exact same size as the Droid phone itself.

Here’s a picture of what came in the box:

As you can see from this picture, the speaker itself is not that much bigger than the “wall wart” of the charger. It uses a microUSB charger cable which is the same as the Droid, which will be handy so I can charge both using the same cables I already have. It also comes with a stereo 3.5mm cable to attach things that don’t have A2DP bluetooth capabilities. Looking at the picture above, you can see the plastic panel behind which the 3.5mm jack resides. On the other side, there is a similar panel for the charger jack.

Here is a look at the back:

The fold out stand keeps the speaker tilted slightly upward, making it perfect to sit on a table. You can also see by looking at the pictures that there are no removable parts at all. It makes the device look very slick (Apple like, even) but I wish there was a replaceable battery. When it gets to the point that I have to have power attached to this thing to be able to use it, it will become mostly useless to me. The instruction manual states that it can be recharged up to 500 times, so it should last me a few years at least.

Now for the “meat” of the product. Here’s the front:

I have to thank whoever made this picture for making it transparent because that just looks awesome. Anyway. Back to the review. The left and right speakers are behind the metal on either side. On the top of device is a phone button which answers and ends phone calls when the device is paired with a phone. I haven’t got to try the phone call functionality yet. I will report back on that.
On the front, the top row is a + and – button. These adjust the volume of the speakers. In the middle is the LED that has blue, red, yellow, and green LEDs. If the two volume buttons are pressed at the same time, the LED shows the battery life remaining by showing various colors.
The bottom row contains reverse, play/pause, and forward buttons that will control playback depending on what the paired device allows. On the bottom of the device, there is a power switch.

I know most people upon seeing this are thinking that the sound from a speaker set so small has to be terrible. It actually is very good sound. It has a technology built in called SRS WOW HD which enhances the sound quality by a lot. There is a way to turn the SRS on and off and without it on, the sound quality suffers a LOT. The main use for this will be vocal podcasts, so the quality wouldn’t be a huge thing. However, I will every now and then play music via this speaker. I have played music via MP3s on my phone and Pandora through these speakers. The compression of Pandora via 3G can be heard in these speakers a lot worse than the earbuds I use, showing that these speakers are much better quality. VBR MP3s playback with GREAT quality.
I’ve also synced this to my desktop computer and used it as computer speakers. I played back a few TV episodes on the computer and the sound was great.
Overall, for the price I paid for this device (around $33) and the size, I am giving it a 5/5. The sound is great. The device itself looks awesome. And it is very easy to sync up to different devices.

Avatar DVD has nothing. (Rant)

I was going to buy Avatar on DVD today. I worked the midnight release “event” (which nobody came to, by the way). I wanted to buy the special edition DVD with the special features and everything. I wanted some reason to buy this movie on DVD. I haven’t bought a DVD in forever.

I am not going to buy this DVD. The reason being — there are NO special features at all on the disc. Nothing. To quote the director:

There’s zero extras! There’s so few extras that you put it in, you push play, and the movie starts. There are no trailers, there’s no shit at the beginning that you have to endlessly go through. I have a deal with the studio and it goes like this: Any movie I make that makes over a billion dollars goes out without a bunch of crap trailers for your other movies.

I think its great that there are no trailers that have to play before you can get to the menus or whatever. But I want some special features. The whole reason I would buy a DVD and not just rent it or watch it online or whatever else is for the special features that you can’t get anywhere else. I think there are going to be a lot of people who buy this DVD and are upset because there are no special features at all on it. I’ve also read that there will be another edition of the DVD coming out later this year that has special features. That is annoying to me. The people that bought it now are not going to want to buy it again in a few months to get the special features. And those of us that want to buy the DVD to get the special features are missing out for the time being. It seems like they did this on purpose to try to make more money. “Here, have just the movie now, and we’ll get you for $20 again in a few months when the special edition comes out. Hell, maybe we’ll charge $25 or $30 cuz its SPECIAL…”

Alright…. I think my rant is done for now. Feel free to hit me up on twitter @lukenova with your comments, or throw them in the disqus comments below.

Movie Review: Secrets of the Mountain

Somewhere between the demands of her career, her ex’s wedding and her kids’ busy schedules, Dana James (Paige Turco, The Agency) is noticing her tight-knit family starting to unravel. An unexpected offer to purchase her family’s mountain property sets up a weekend road trip, which she hopes will bring her family back together. But when they arrive, they quickly learn that the mountain is much more than it seems. An ancient secret and a treacherous quest will test the family like never before. It’s an edge-of-the seat thriller that reminds us that when times are tough, families don’t run away from problems — they run back to each other.

This movie was advertised on the Walmart TVs in the electronics department for at least the last month. I had to watch it just to see how it was. I went in pretty much expecting it to be terrible. It was a made for TV movie and it was sponsored entirely by Walmart and Proctor and Gamble. The first thing I noticed was hilarious product placement. About 10 minutes in, there is a scene where the family is getting ready for dinner in the kitchen/dining room area. Every product seen is Great Value branded. I think I remember seeing coffee creamer and orange juice and one of those take and bake pizzas from the deli area. Then you can see a reusable Walmart shopping bag on the back counter. Later on, it is breakfast time the next day and the youngest girl gets out a box of great value cereal and holds it directly in front of the camera for about 30 seconds while talking. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such blatant product placement in a movie. However, thankfully, once they get away from the kitchen area, there is no more noticeable product placement.

The idea of this movie is that a woman inherits a plot of land from her supposed dead uncle. She doesn’t have time to do anything with it because she is a single mother with three kids. She gets a letter that someone is interested in buying the land. They go to the land to see the house that the woman hasn’t seen since her childhood. Turns out that her supposed dead uncle has been living there because he has been studying what is supposed to be in the mountain. He is a huge history buff and believes that there are Aztec ruins inside the mountain that they own.

A cut scene is shown of the woman’s childhood with her uncle where a man tries to run her uncle off the road and kill him to get to his land. We soon find out that this is the man trying to buy the land. The family then sets out on an adventure to see if there is, in fact, any Aztec treasures in their mountain.

I doubt anyone reading this will actually ever watch this movie, but if you do plan on it, you might not want to read any further. Spoiler alert. You have been warned.

The movie starts out with the older brother and sister always fighting. The mom is trying to figure out what happened between them but never has the time to sit down and have a conversation. This same brother and sister team miraculously stop fighting when they come together as a team to find the way to the entrance of the inside of the mountain where the treasure is. Later on, as the family is tip toeing around a cliff ledge, the mom sends the older brother and youngest sister on so she can have a conversation with her middle daughter to find out what actually happened. I thought it was really strange that she would send her children into what could be certain death so that she could have a chance to talk to one of her other children. Anyway, we find out through another cut scene that someone had texted the girl to come to basketball practice if she wanted to go to prom with him. She did and got totally embarrassed by the guy turning her down. Her brother is also on the basketball team and he just looked at her as she walked away. Later on in the movie, after the brother helps his sister up from a bridge that is falling into a bottomless pit, they finally make up. It kinda seems like they should have kissed and made up because they were acting more like a couple than brother and sister throughout the whole movie. Thats some of the bad acting that was seen.

In my opinion, all the characters were played well except for the brother and sister duo I mentioned above. The movie was mostly predictable from the very beginning. It’s a family movie so it has to have a happy ending and not much bad can happen. They start out with problems, they go through something that brings them closer together, they forgive each other for their problems, they move in with their uncle, and everyone lives happily ever after. The movie could have been better if it was rated PG-13 so that a little more action could have happened in the cave. However, if that would have been the case, it couldn’t have aired in prime time on NBC and walmart probably wouldn’t have sponsored it.

I’ve also read rumors that this could be a pilot for a TV show that will also be sponsored by Walmart and P&G to air on NBC. I really hope not. It went over well as a movie. The ratings were really good from what I read. But this was hyped for weeks on the Walmart TV network and was probably advertised on NBC for weeks as well. I don’t think people will come back week after week to watch content like this. In the busy world that we live in these days, families rarely actually watch TV together. Everyone has their own shows that they like to watch. I don’t think kids would watch a show based on this movie on their own, nor would adults.

So….my overall rating is…. 3/5. It was an alright movie. It was better than I expected. It had its weak and strong points. I found myself actually getting into it during the last 15 minutes or so. If the brother/sister duo wouldn’t have acted like they were flirting more than being bro/sis, I would probably give it a 4. However, the only (legal) way to obtain this right now is to pay $12 for the DVD at Walmart. I would not recommend doing that. If you can find it streaming somewhere online for free (legally of course) feel free to watch it. Its only about an hour and a half once all the commercials are taken out, and its a decent little family movie.

This is an awesome little box that plays divx, mp3, and picture files from a USB storage device (flash drive or external hard drive). It cost me a little less than $40 with shipping and all. It has recently been listed on Amazon for $29.99 with no shipping charge. (Feel Free to click my amazon affiliate link if you want to buy this device. It costs nothing extra to you and it will help me out a little…)

Sony SMPU10 USB Media Player (Black)

I took that picture. As you can see, the remote is rather well laid out. The box itself is quite small so it will leave a very small footprint in your video system set up.

Here’s a look at the back of the device (I borrowed this picture):

As you can see, its only long enough to accommodate the outputs it has. To the left is HDMI, then the Green-Blue-Red Component video outs, then the Red-White audio outs, then the Yellow composite video out, then the orange digital audio out. Finally, there is the DC Power input.

The device is very easy to set up. Simply plug in the power cable and the video cable of your choice. Then power on the device either using the power button on the box or the remote. It will lead through a very simple set up process and then it is ready to play. You supply a USB device that has video or audio or picture files on it. I tested it using some video files I have (legally acquired, of course *nudge wink*) and it worked perfectly. I have read that it doesn’t play a wide range of video file types. However, most of the stuff I have is encoded with XviD, which is the open source version of DiVX and it completely compatible.

I am using an older TV with which I have to use an RF modulator to even get A/V cables connected to it. So….my set up is not the best to test the quality of video this outputs. However, I can report that it looks about the same as the output of DiVX/XviD files from the Xbox360 using the same RF modulator. It is said to up-convert to 1080p so if anyone has a 1080p TV they would loan me for testing, that would be great! ;)

Pros:

  • Very small footprint

  • ability to work with Hi-Def as well as standard def TVs
  • simple, yet complete remote
  • does one thing and does it well: Plays divx files

Cons:

  • Menu system. It is functional but not eloquent. Looks like something from a VCR from 10-15 years ago.

  • Lack of file type support. If your content is not in xvid or divx, it will have to be re-encoded.

Pro/Con, depending on your use:

  • Only USB port is in the front.
    • If you plan on using this with a USB flash drive and changing content regularly, having the USB port on the front is handy for convenient access.

    • If you plan on using it with an external drive and leaving it as a more permanent set up, having the cable coming out of the front is less than appealing.

All in all, I would recommend this device if you have the need for it. There are other devices out there that will play divx files and do other things as well (such as streaming video from Netflix, etc.) but they are generally more expensive than this box. At $30, I didn’t know what to expect from this one. I was very pleasantly surprised. It is simple, and it does what it does well: play divx files.

KFC Double Down

I have been seeing commercials for the KFC Double Down sandwich for the past few weeks. Yesterday, before work, I decided I would finally try the thing. I wasn’t sure what to expect. The idea of the sandwich is that there is no bun. It is a breaded, fried, boneless chicken breast patty on the top and bottom (where buns would be) and there is bacon, cheese, and sauce in the middle. It is somewhat like a cordon bleu type thing, except bacon instead of ham. And bacon just makes everything better.

So my verdict: I liked it. It was actually really good. It can’t be healthy at all, but as with most things, if its not good for you, it probably tastes better. And this was good. I recommend trying it if you thing you can handle a sandwich with no bun.

Bluetooth keyboard on the Droid!

I am currently typing this post from a bluetooth keyboard that is paired with my phone. This adds a LOT of functionality to this phone as a content creation device. For example, I can now write blog posts pretty much anywhere. I technically could do this before, but I was typing them on the Droid’s built in keyboard. That keyboard is nice when texting and for some IM conversations, but it just isn’t something I’d want to type a long blog post on. This keyboard, however, is very nice to type on. I’m laying on my bed typing right now. I think I will take the keyboard with me today and see how it works “in the real world.”
